We’re proud to share with you this comprehensive account of all of the impressive outreach efforts under way throughout the College. In complement with our scientific research, these outreach activities are integral to the mission of the College of the Environment. Our investment in communities, in connecting children and adults with the world around them through a scientific lens, and in empowering policy-makers with the tools and information to make good decisions based on sound science, are a vital part of the vision of the College.

Online Data Entry

NatureMapping announces the online data entry and location mapping site for reporting your wildlife observations.

One of our goals is to create a biodiversity database and build layers of information about birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, terrestrial and aquatic insects and plants in a way that when combined gives all of us a picture of the biological health of an area...a neighborhood, city, county, and state.

Your data will be added to the NatureMapping database after further review.

Currently, data can be entered for the following states: AR, CA, IA, MA, MI, NY, PA, TX, VA, WA other states will be added in conjunction with the development of their spreadsheet and NatureTracker software for PDA's with GPS units.

Washington Park Arboretum BioBlitz 2010

The year 2010 has been declared the International Year of Biodiversity. With generous support from the Arboretum Foundation, teams of scientists, students and inquisitive citizens attempted to inventory all the life they could find in the Arboretum's north end.

The Arboretum is a hidden gem on the shores of Lake Washington. Jointly managed by University of Washington and the City of Seattle, its 230 acres are a dynamic assortment of plants found nowhere else. The City owns the land and the University owns all of the trees and plant collections.

May 21-22, 2010. The Greenhouse was "Science Central" where all the
scientists, staff, and volunteers gathered.

Over 100 scientists, taxa experts, volunteers, high school and college
students participated in the 24-hour inventory of birds, mammals,
amphibians, reptiles, insects, fungi, lichen, and plants.

Animal Facts in Spanish

Several of the animal fact sheets have been translated into spanish by 9th and 10th grade students at Waterville High School. This translation effort will help expand the user base of the NatureMapping Program.

Over 50 scientists, taxa experts, volunteers, land owners and news media participated in the 24-hour inventory of birds, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, insects, and plants.

California Wildlife Distribution Maps

Breeding Range Map
The green area shows predicted habitats for breeding only. The purpose of the vertebrate distribution maps is to provide more precise information about the current distribution of individual native species within their general ranges than is generally available from field guides.

The habitats were identified using satellite imagery, other datasets and experts throughout the state, as part of the California Gap Analysis Project.

The NatureMapping Program has created several new animal facts sheets featuring bats, bears, wolves and birds of Washington state.

NatureMapping Vision

The NatureMapping Program's vision is to create a national network that links natural resource agencies, academia and land planners with local communities primarily through schools.

NatureMapping's Future

NatureMapping provides many different opportunities for environmental education and hands-on field work.

NatureMapping will continue to develop through three phases:
1) Species identification and data collection
2) Data analysis, statistics and graphics
3) Computers, remote sensing, GIS (Geographical Information Systems), local area networking and Internet
